4 Ways We Improve Human Potential Through Coaching
Welcome to the Leadership Vision Podcast, our show helping you build a positive team culture. Our consulting firm has been doing this work for the past 25 years, ensuring that leaders are mentally engaged and emotionally healthy.
In this episode, we share a brief conversation between Brian Schubring and Nathan Freeburg about the history of coaching at Leadership Vision. We discuss what our coaching philosophy is, who we coach, and why we coach.
How We Started Coaching at Leadership Vision
Three years ago, we began to respond to clients asking for more coaching based on our philosophy and our techniques. Early in 2020, we had two of our largest clients come to us and request to capitalize on the feedback sessions that we had after our team engagement sessions. When Covid hit, things got even more intense, and more leaders wanted their people to be taken care of more specifically.
We quickly realized that we found a niche in the coaching realm where we write curriculum specifically for a leader’s needs within their organization. Then we started to also coach teams individually on the content that we created, and that’s where our coaching foundation really came to form.
The ROAD Roadmap
Everyone is on a journey and when it comes to coaching, we believe we’re walking alongside our clients on their professional roadways. We don’t really know where the roadway is coming or going but if we can walk with and alongside our clients, that’s where we can help.
In our coaching sessions, we use a process we call the ROAD roadmap. ROAD is an acronym that stands for reflection, opportunity, attention, and direction.
1. Reflection
We believe that our coaching sessions are rooted in reflection, giving leaders the chance to pause and reflect on a topic that’s important for their development or their emotional or professional well-being. This reflection is like trying to isolate their activity within a one-hour time so they can truly sit back, be comfortable, and reflect.
2. Opportunities
The second thing we do is look for opportunities based on the topic that we’re discussing. These are opportunities for development, opportunities for growth, or opportunities for improvement.
3. Attention
The third step is about paying attention. It’s noticing what people are paying attention to and directing their attention towards. Sometimes we are directing their attention towards the topic that we’re discussing or understanding why they’re paying attention to something else.
4. Direction
The last word in the acronym of ROAD is direction. In this step, we’re paying attention to when we need to provide direction and when we need to follow the direction of our client. We believe people often have the answers either within themselves or within reach. Through this process of reflection on these opportunities, people can find those answers.
Why Does Leadership Vision Provide Coaching Services
As a business, we are focused on human potential and human performance. We’re using Strengths and team engagement processes to help people understand their potential and understand their performance.
We know that if someone is going to really tap into those two areas, they need a bridge from potential to performance. And that bridge is practice. They need to practice paying attention to things that are important. Practice integrating Strengths. Practice reflection. So that when they’re faced with challenges, they can actually be present enough to know when they need to step in. If leaders don’t have that level of presence, they’re just randomly trying to lead.
At Leadership Vision, we believe that coaching can be a part of that bridge. We provide coaching services to help us understand what we bring to the table and how we show up. What is the practice and presence of being the person that you’re designed to be?
We believe our coaching practice is about intentionally getting you to slow down so that you can reflect on meaningful topics that can help you be a better person, a better team member, and a better leader.
