Building a Thriving Team Culture
Building a team that not only thrives but excels in its pursuits is often the goal of any forward-thinking leader. A team’s culture can be the driving force behind its success or failure, making it essential to foster an environment that promotes growth, collaboration, and a focus on harnessing individual Strengths.
In our conversation, Brian Schubering takes a deep dive into four common pitfalls when it comes to Strengths-based leadership, and the strategies and insights needed to cultivate a thriving team culture.
Assessing Readiness
The first common mistake many teams make is diving into Strengths work without assessing their readiness, which can lead to frustration and hinder progress. Jumping in isn’t bad, but without some proper consideration you might get a little discouraged. To mitigate this, it’s crucial to be mindful of your team’s current culture.
Bolster your team by securing supportive partners who can champion the Strengths-based approach. Strengths alone can only be so effective; success in any Strengths journey involves partners and advocates. We need to rely on relationship with others who know us and can help understand how our Strengths apply.Â
Integrating Strengths
The second mistake that we see all too often is people take the assessment, read their top five results, and think they’re done with Strengths work. There’s often no follow-up or additional thought on how to interpret this information beyond the results page.Â
Understanding and leveraging the unique Strengths of each team member can transform the way teams operate. Recognizing and integrating these Strengths into the team can result in a more dynamic and engaged workforce.
Be aware of how to integrate this information into an environment that maybe isn’t ready for it. Starting is crucial, of course, but knowing how to proceed in a potentially unready environment can be just as important. By stepping into a Strengths experience within your organization, or even your family, you might find people who respond positively and some who don’t like even engage at all.
Getting Feedback
Understanding your Strengths is crucial, but how can you gain new insights about them? Seek feedback in structured conversations with people who know you well but can maintain an objective viewpoint. Starting with the strength you resonate with most and working through your top five can anchor your Strengths into your behavior and interactions more effectively, enhancing both your personal growth and your team dynamics.
Remember, success in any Strengths journey involves finding partners and advocates, because Strengths alone can only be so effective. We need to rely on relationship with others who know us and can help understand how these Strengths apply.
Typecasting
The fourth and final common mistake is typecasting, or labeling someone based on one’s Strength and limiting their roles. This can prevent them from showing up in other areas where their strengths might be needed.
Flexibility within team roles is paramount to avoid the trap of typecasting. Brian highlights the necessity of recognizing when to seek external support and explores the various resources available to enhance your Strengths journey. Initiating open conversations within your team is a fundamental step in developing a Strengths-based culture that nurtures every member’s growth.
Unlocking Strengths on Your Team
By being mindful of common pitfalls, engaging in reflective conversations, and maintaining flexibility, leaders can create an environment where every team member’s Strengths are not only recognized but fully utilized for collective success.
