Embracing Your StrengthsFinder Theme Names (Podcast)
…these [StrengthsFinder Theme] names come to us neutral. And I would hope that we embrace them in a very neutral way but also in a curious way, asking ourselves, ‘what do these names mean? What do these names say about who I am today and what do these names of Strength say about who I have been in the past and who I could be in the future?’~ Brian Schubring
Welcome to the next installment of the Leadership Vision Podcast, where we share our expertise in the discovery, practice, and implementation of StrengthsFinder. Today’s show focuses on embracing your StrengthsFinder Theme Names. In last week’s episode, I talked with Carrie Jones, our COO, about some of the ways she has learned to embrace and accept her Themes of Strength on a personal level. On today’s show, I talk with our founder and CEO, Brian Schubring, about specific ways we help our clients understand and embrace their StrengthsFinder Theme names.
In this episode, you’ll learn,
- How it’s normal to have an initial reaction to your Theme names, sometimes positive, sometimes negative.
- How to stop and evaluate what Strengths ask you to notice.
- How these names of Strengths help you understand your neighbors, your family, your colleagues, etc.
- How your Themes of Strengths are part of the larger narrative of your life.
To give a little more context to this conversation, Brian and I talked shortly after a client engagement where several members of the team we were working with had an adverse reaction to their StrengthsFinder Theme names. They were resistant to embracing those names, because, well, many of them had preconceived notions about what they meant. It caused our team to pause and address the power, both positive and negative, that those Theme names can have on individuals. Brian and I talk about how the work we do helps individuals go from initial, sometimes cynical, understandings of five names on a page, to forming a deeper relational connection with what those words say about us, in the past, present or future context.
