What Gives You Energy? (mini-podcast)
Welcome to the next installment of the Leadership Vision Podcast, where we share our expertise in the discovery, practice, and implementation of StrengthsFinder.
On this mini-episode of the podcast, we’ve got a simple Strengths question for you to ponder. We’ve found that reflecting on a straightforward question can be a profound way of understanding ourselves better. When we also look at questions through a lens of Strength, we can create a much deeper level of understanding about how we interact with the world.
So today, the question is this:Â what gives you energy?
Reflect on the things that give you energy in life and then try to connect them back to one of your Themes of Strength.
There are plenty of things in life that drain energy but we still have to do them. Things like taking out the garbage, changing kids’ diapers, doing taxes, or a host of other things aren’t fun, but we do them because we’re adults. This exercise isn’t about avoiding those things but instead bringing attention to what gives us the most energy.
A Personal Example
For me, no matter what I have going on, I always find energy when I dream into the future. Sometimes when I’m exhausted, either physically or mentally, I daydream about how I’m going to make something better down the road. Most often, if I can connect those things to people I care about, I can fuel myself for days or weeks.
This behavior most clearly connects to my Themes of Futuristic and Ideation, but also by my Theme of Maximizer. When I’m using these Strengths to dream into a new, better future for myself, my family, or the company, I’m energized thinking about what could be.
What About You?
What gives you energy and how do your Strengths contribute? Think of a few examples and share them with someone you trust. Ask for honest feedback and see what you can learn. As a bonus, ask them to answer the same question and then see what similarities or differences you both have.
