Three Types of Strengths Fit: Personal, Relational, and Environmental (podcast)
Welcome to the next installment of the Leadership Vision Podcast where we share our expertise in the discovery, practice, and implementation of CliftonStrengths.
On this episode of the podcast, we talk about Strengths and Fit with Logan Joyce, one of our consultants and Director of Business Development. “Fit” isn’t a topic we hear much about in the world of Strengths, but we think its incredibly important. For as much time as we spend trying to understand each of our Strengths individually, perhaps we should pay an equal amount of time understanding how those Strengths Fit into the environments and attitudes of the people and places where we live and work.
“Fit” isn’t about fitting a Strengths profile to a job description. Rather, “Fit” is descriptive in revealing how someone with Strengths that are generative, fits into their work or home life.
On this episode, Logan and I discuss three types of fit: Personal, Relational, and Environmental. Listen now as we unpack those three areas of fit and talk about a few things to look for to help bring some alignment around this idea. Then, evaluate your situation to determine if you are in a good Strengths fit.
Three Types of Strengths “Fit”
When we talk about Strengths having a good “fit,” we’re referring to an alignment in these three key areas:
- Personal Fit: Do you have personal alignment, acceptance, and appreciation of your Strengths? Do you understand and accept your Strengths as valuable, unique, and contribution to your team? If you don’t, then they don’t quite “fit” you yet. This type of fit can take a lot of work and may require overcoming self-doubt and negative perceptions of what makes you stand out.
- Relational Fit: Do others expect you to act out of your strengths? Do those around you (at work and at home) know, understand, and appreciate what makes you strong? Do they go to you for help when your Strengths “fit” the situation?
- Environmental Fit: Does your organization cultivate and sustain Strengths? Does the environment welcome the generative application of Strengths? Your environment can be the most difficult to establish. Sometimes we can change our settings to become a better fit or leave them for a new one.
The better your Strengths fit, the more distinct you will be, the more you will stand out, and the greater chance you will have to help transform your organization.
