Have Your Strengths Been Misunderstood?
Welcome to the Leadership Vision Podcast, our show helping you build a positive team culture. Our consulting firm has been doing this work for the past 25 years, ensuring that leaders are mentally engaged and emotionally healthy.
Have your Strengths ever been misunderstood? In this episode, the experts, Brian and Dr. Linda Schubring give a brief answer to this question. As you listen, put yourself in the mind of the person asking the question. Think about how you can connect with any of their thoughts around this idea of Strength shaming or Strengths envy.
Have Your Strengths Been Misunderstood?
Raise your hand if your Strengths have ever been misunderstood or misinterpreted. One of the things that we’ve always tried to do at Leadership Vision is to correct the misinterpretations of Strengths. We believe Strength shaming, Strengths envy, and blaming Strengths are expressions of someone struggling with what their Strengths are saying about them.
Part of our work is to be mirrors of light and life; to reveal something in you that’s brilliant and beautiful. Another part of our job is to also hold up a mirror to what you’re saying, feeling, and projecting. Sometimes Strengths are a really close mirror that reveals something about you that you’ve always known but have yet to accept. We as humans fear the unknown and sometimes the greatest unknown enemy is the self we see in the mirror.
Strengths can sometimes reveal something that we’ve always known about ourselves. Our Strengths exist in the context and the story of our lives.
If we spend just a little bit of time reflecting on our story, our lives, and our Strengths, we’ll find they have shown up so many times in positive, generous, and generative ways. It might allow a shift in our thinking from perhaps feeling really misunderstood to being able to articulate more of our story, the good parts of our Strengths, and the good parts about the way we show up.
