Preventing and Overcoming Four Common StrengthsFinder Mistakes (Podcast)
Welcome to the next installment of the Leadership Vision Podcast, where we share our expertise in the discovery, practice, and implementation of StrengthsFinder.
Today on the show I’m joined again by our president and CEO, Brian Schurbing. We’ll be talking about some of the most common mistakes people make when trying to build a Strengths Based understanding of themselves and those around them. We’ll offer some best practices and lessons we’ve learned (the hard way), that may help revive your efforts, and encourage you to stay the course.
The four mistakes are:
- Jumping in too quickly
- Quitting too quickly
- Using Strengths as an excuse for bad behavior
- Typecasting
- Not asking for help
We’ll share some practical advice to help you avoid these mistakes, or if you find yourself doing these things now, we’ll share simple activities to get more out of your StrengthsFinder results.
When you’re thinking about starting your StrengthsFinder journey either as an individual, as part of a team, or as part of a broader organizational initiative, the most important thing to keep in mind is that it is a developmental process that takes time. If you are already on a journey with Strengths, then you know that it can be slow and sometimes hard to integrate Strengths language into your everyday life.
Like learning any new language, your understanding of Strengths will grow and develop over time but, there are going to be setbacks that challenge your resolve to build a Strengths based environment.
Don’t give up!
Three Questions for Reflection
No matter where you are on your journey with Strengths, ask yourself the following questions:
- What direction am I going in with Strengths?
- What do I want to get out of this tool?
- What kind of help do I need to understand better how to leverage my Strengths?
Your answers to those question may help you get more out of StrengthsFinder.
…part of the success of any Strength’s journey is finding partners and advocates to go on that journey with you because Strengths engaged in self-reflection by yourself can only be so effective. We need to rely on the relationships we have with other people. Those who know us can help us understand how these Strengths apply. ~Brian Schubring
