Which of Your Strengths Could Be ‘Louder’ and Which Could Be ‘Quieter’? Summer Strengths Conversation #3
Welcome to the next installment of the Leadership Vision Podcast, where we share our expertise in the discovery, practice, and implementation of StrengthsFinder.
We’re on summer break at Leadership Vision, but fear not! Our consultants got together with Nathan to record a series of mini-episodes for the podcast. Over the next few weeks, we’ll share one Strengths-Based question to ponder in the week ahead. This episode is the third in a four-week series and we hope it will provide you with something to chew on as you go about your week. Go back and listen to the others! These questions are perfect for discussion with a friend, team, or even your entire organization.
Here’s the question for this week:
Which of your Strengths could be ‘louder’ and which Strengths could be ‘quieter’ at times?
The idea behind this question is to get listeners to think about which of their Strengths can be overbearing and which of your Strengths can be overshadowed. Another way of phrasing this question is: Which of your Strengths is being muted for any number of reasons and how do you try to make sure that doesn’t happen? On the flip side, which of your Strengths can be too loud or pushy and how do you find appropriate ways to engage with it and when?
A Personal Example
My StrengthsFinder Theme of Strategic is grounded in innate instinct. However, I haven’t always trusted or leveraged this instinct to its highest capacity. Strategic is my Strength from which my wisdom flows because it takes into consideration where I’ve been, what I’ve learned, and who I’m with. Because this Strength is grounded in instinct or a sense of “just knowing,” it can be very hard to articulate for myself. It’s also hard to explain to others which causes me to question my Strength and not always leverage it as I should. On the “flip side,” my Strength of Activator has been one I’ve been practicing the pacing of my entire life. When I’ve not leveraged my Strategic well, my Activator can take over or be “loud” to move without careful thought and planning. These two Strengths have a symbiotic relationship in a lot of ways.
So what about you? Which Strength of yours could be ‘louder’ and which Strengths could be ‘quieter’ at times? Think of a few examples, jot them down, and share with a friend or colleague. Ask for feedback and see if they agree or disagree. As a bonus, ask them to answer the same question, then compare to see what similarities or differences you both have. It may help both of you in the way you’re engaging your Strengths in more generative ways.
