Welcome to the Leadership Vision Podcast, our show helping you build a positive team culture. Our consulting firm has been doing this work for the past 25 years, ensuring that leaders are mentally engaged and emotionally healthy.
Have you ever wondered how fostering connection and community can revolutionize your workplace culture? Dr. Linda and Brian Schubring, and I recently explored the topic of connection and community in the workplace. The Surgeon General’s recent report on workplace mental health and well-being provided insightful recommendations that overlap significantly with our work promoting healthy team cultures.
…we seek to facilitate the kind of cultures where people are interacting, where people are known and seen and heard, where people even want to collaborate and team up together. ~Linda

We echo the profound notion of Connection and Community. We believe Connection and Community is all about nurturing those uplifting social exchanges and fostering relationships within the workplace. This, in turn, plays a pivotal role in bolstering the well-being of employees. This taps into two fundamental human needs: social support and the innate desire to feel a sense of belonging.
When working with our clients, we emphasize the benefits of getting to know colleagues personally. This is paramount in creating a sense of belonging. Building connections should not be overthought, and leaders can try different activities or events to foster a sense of community, whether in-person, remote, or hybrid workplaces. The simplest activities can sometimes enhance team dynamics and create a positive culture more than we will ever know.
Why Belonging and Inclusion is Important
Creating a sense of belonging and inclusion within the workplace is fundamental to improving employees’ mental health and overall well-being. Leaders need to recognize this and work towards fostering an environment where every team member feels valued and included. From cultivating trusted relationships to leveraging diversity within teams, leaders have the power to shape a workplace culture that promotes mental health and well-being.
Human Needs
Social Support is having the networks and relationships that can offer physical and psychological help, and can mitigate feelings of loneliness and isolation.Belonging
Surgeon General’s Framework for Workplace Mental Health and Well-Being
Belonging is the feeling of being an accepted member of a group.
Workplace connection and community are vital in establishing a positive work culture. It’s not just about team-building activities or group projects. Trust falls, and potlucks have a place, but genuine connection and community within a workplace extend beyond professional boundaries. It’s about getting to know your coworkers personally, understanding their strengths, and appreciating their unique contributions to the team. Fostering a culture of inclusion and belonging can create strong team unity that enhances workplace well-being.
Mental Health and Well-Being
Workplace mental health and well-being are directly linked to the culture of inclusion and belonging. Employees who feel valued and included are more likely to feel satisfied and motivated. Leaders must cultivate trusted relationships with their teams. This involves open communication, active listening, and genuine care for each team member’s well-being. By fostering a culture of trust and collaboration, leaders can create a supportive work environment. This will often promote mental health and well-being, https://mentalhealthinnovation.org.
It’s even more important now to create that sense of connection and community ’cause we want our people to feel safe. And protected. We want them to be in environments where they feel that they can do their best work and that they’re surrounded by people who are making a social contribution to their wellbeing, which increases a sense of belonging. That’s a leadership challenge; how can we lead in a ways that are generative to {individual} human beings that also benefit what’s happening in the workplace as a whole?

In addition to fostering trusted relationships, leaders can leverage the diversity within their teams to create meaningful connections. This involves acknowledging and celebrating each team member’s diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. By doing so, leaders can foster a sense of belonging and inclusivity that strengthens team dynamics.
Your Team
The Surgeon General’s report on workplace mental health and well-being provides invaluable insights for leaders seeking to improve their workplace culture. As a result of fostering connection, community, and well-being, leaders can create a positive and inclusive work environment that promotes mental health and the overall well-being of their teams.
Reflect on how your team or organization ensures everyone’s voice is heard and included in decision-making. What are you doing to cultivate a sense of connection and community in your workplace?
