Three Ways to Defend your Magic (podcast)
Welcome to the next installment of the Leadership Vision Podcast, where we share our expertise in the discovery, practice, and implementation of StrengthsFinder.
In this episode, Sara Schlipp-Riedel and I discuss the idea of “Defending One’s Magic.” If that sounds a little “fluffy” to you, the idea is simple. Defending your magic is being able to fall back on truths learned through your Strengths whenever you question who you know yourself to be.
It’s the idea of self-discovery, self-empowerment, and self-awareness. Our curriculum has been developed to offer teams and individuals the opportunity to take full advantage of what StrengthsFinder has to offer. This idea translates into the ability to comprehend better and articulate one’s “magic!”
This conversation is a reminder that when an interaction falls short of the hopes and expectations that comes from the positive aspects of Strengths, it can be profoundly more deflating. We hope these simple reminders to defend your magic will be helpful.

What is Strengths Magic?
Defending your magic means knowing who you are, celebrating the good and the bad, and feeling challenged in what you know makes you unique in the face of adversity. Sometimes, either through people or circumstances, we lose a grip on who we are and need some reminders to help us protect our magic.

In this Episode, you will Learn…
- How to see all things through a Strengths lens
- Why and how to find a Strengths “buddy”
- Ways to enhance your knowledge about your Strengths
We encourage you to sit down and make a list of 10 people who understand your Strengths, either in explicit StrengthsFinder language or more generally, and ask them for feedback. Sometimes, when we can’t see the magic in our own Strengths, it’s helpful to call on these people. Other times, they can help take the edge off the rougher or less matured aspects of who we are.
Further Reflection
Over the next week, answer the following questions:
- What does Protecting Your Magic mean to you?
- Who are the people in your life that are a hindrance to Protecting Your Magic?
- Would any of these people benefit from learning more about how to invest in their own Strengths?
