Understanding the Link between Fear and Courage (podcast)
Welcome to the next installment of the Leadership Vision Podcast, where we share our expertise in the discovery, practice, and implementation of StrengthsFinder.
On this episode of the podcast, Carrie Jones and I talk about courage. A while back, our team did an activity during a staff meeting where we were each given a seemingly random phrase and asked to come up with a 3 to 5-minute presentation related to our interpretation of that phrase. Carrie’s phrase lead her to talk about the idea of fear, ultimately reflecting on the idea of courage, which as you may remember from episode 26, is one of our values here at Leadership Vision.
Carrie defines courage as “acting in the face of fear.” Fear and courage are not mutually exclusive ideas as she and I discuss in this podcast, but may depend on one another. As you’ll hear Carrie say, it’s ultimately the triumph over fear that makes us courageous.
In this episode, you’ll first hear what Carrie shared at our staff meeting related to our value of courage. After Carrie’s story, we discuss each of the ideas she raised in a more laid back, unedited setting. We wrestle with the appropriate role that fear plays in helping us become courageous, but also how fear can paralyze us and prevent us from reaching our potential. Fear is temporary; regret is forever. We also share a prompt at the end of the episode to encourage you to live more courageously, so listen now!
“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”~Nelson Mandela
Our Value of Courage
Courage is one of our values at Leadership Vision and we believe that Courage is about being the person you are, not the person you want to be. This is how we define it,
Courage is saying I recognize the uniqueness and distinction of somebody else and courage says I am not that I am this. Courage is knowing that when you need to step into who you need to be for others that you have the willingness and the faith to do so. Courage is also providing other people the opportunities to do the same.
Strengths enable us to stand up and be more of who we were created to be, while also honoring the unique gifts of others. The more we know about our Strengths, the more we are able to confidently and courageously step into any situation.
