Why We are Hosting a StrengthsFinder Preview in Washington, D.C.
It is a busy season for our company. We have been working hard with many clients to help build strong people, teams and cultures. Along with client work, we never stop thinking about who our future clients will be. Part of the way people connect with us is to attend a preview experience where we help them understand the ‘why’ of what we do.

- Why do we do everything in a relational and intentional way?
We have completed preview experiences in Minneapolis, Sioux Falls, and are hosting one on June 4th, 2015 in Washington, D.C.
Why D.C.?
Washington, D.C. is, and will always be, a special place for me. In the summer of 1998, I started as an intern for a Senator from Minnesota. I applied to 60+ possible internships and received two offers of ‘employment.’ My home congressman from Illinois, William Lipinksi, and my adopted home state of Minnesota’s Senator Rod Grams. It was an easy decision which internship to pick, the Senate was more prestigious and it paid, $1,000 a month (which barely covered my rent)!
The short story of my time in Washington, D.C. – I was an intern for one month before being hired on full-time and then worked my way up the chain of command as many do on capitol hill.
Fast forward to last week…
I was in Baltimore for some work and had a block of time to use before a flight. It did not take me long to think, “I want to get to D.C.” I jumped on a train and 35 minutes later I was walking out of Union Station on a 70 degree spring day in the nation’s capitol. If you have not been to D.C. in the spring, it is an absolutely amazing place to visit.
People from everywhere are there. All races, and ethnicities from around the world can be there for different reasons. It has an energy I have not experienced in all my travels. It has a buzz. It is palatable if you pay attention.
Building Strategic Partnership
There is a lot going on in Washington, D.C. which is only 68.3 square miles. In my last job before coming back to Leadership Vision, I had a team member who operated a site in the Washington, D.C. area who I traveled to see once a quarter. During this time I was charged with building strategic partnerships for our institution. Over the years I developed many good friends and strong relationships in that context.
So, when I came back to Leadership Vision to work with StrengthsFinder, I urged my boss, Brian, to think about a strategy to work with clients using StrengthsFinder in Washington, D.C. Brian agreed and we put together a plan to host a preview experience in D.C. on June 4th, 2015. I mentioned earlier that we do things in a relational and intentional way. So, I am excited to connect many of my key relationships to what I am doing now.
It is my hope that we can increase our footprint in the nation’s capitol and help companies and governmental agencies have more engaged employees through what we do with StrengthsFinder. The buzz that one can feel when you are in D.C. is something we want to tap into. There is so much going on there, we want to be a part of it. This is not something we are doing by accident, rather it fits who we are as a company and we think it fits what is happening in the nation’s capitol.
