Why You need to Unlearn Your Leadership Skills
Welcome to the Leadership Vision Podcast, our show helping you build a positive team culture. Our consulting firm has been doing this work for the past 25 years, ensuring that leaders are mentally engaged and emotionally healthy.
In this episode, we discuss the importance of letting go of some of our leadership “best practices” and being willing to open ourselves up to new interpretations of those leadership styles. Brian and Nathan discuss the importance of unlearning the successes that brought us to where we are and that we may need to be open to a new leadership style to get to the next level.
This is actually just a promo for a podcast series we’ll be starting this fall, but during the process of planning, Brian became very excited by this topic, so Nathan hit record. Listen now!
Your Assignment
As you listen to this episode today, we want you to consider two simple things:
- What are a few key components of your leadership style?
- Of those things, what may need to be rethought or changed?
Jot a few things down, then share them with a trusted friend.
A Few Highlights from the Episode
Part of a leader’s development lies in the undoing of the beliefs, rules, values, and methods that have got them here. There are many times when we outgrow the values and rules that we have come to know. Many leaders don’t give themselves permission to outgrow something and move into something else.
Brian Schubring, 3:18
Part of breaking through to another level of performance as a leader is giving yourself the permission to break down some of the very steps that got you to where you are. Because patterns become normalized and when behaviors become normalized, they don’t necessarily change. They become more honed in on getting better at what you’ve always been doing. If you wanna achieve something different, we have to undo some of those patterns, but loosen it up a little bit so we can expand our thinking.
Brian Schubring, 4:12
But the point of this whole thing is that this chief officer was willing to let go of some of the best practices that got her there, to be open to a new interpretation of her leadership style, and of the team members and how she might go forward successfully.
